Abstract

The lectures ask 'how can religion be related to violent acts?' In addressing that question Professor Mendus discusses the concept of toleration; dwells on the history of religious intolerance; the differences between modern and historical understandings of religious belief; and the relationship between religion and politics. The ultimate aim of the lectures is to provide some lessons as to how we can secure political peace in the face of religious difference.
